Frequently Asked Questions

Why is medication management important?

Medication management is a form of psychiatric treatments that may enhance your emotional, psychological, and social health. It can help address symptoms you experience from any mental health condition you may have.

Antidepressants work by impacting neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, to alleviate the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders. Like taking an antibacterial medicine for a cold, medications such as antidepressants are taken to make mental illness symptoms more manageable.

Who can prescribe medications?

A psychiatrist has a title that includes MD or DO. They have completed medical school and a four-year residency in psychiatry. They are a licensed physician who became a board-certified psychiatrist after graduating from medical school, passing their title requirements, completing a psychiatry residency, and passing a board exam in psychiatry. Some types of psychiatrists, such as adolescent psychiatrists, are required to complete additional items in order to become certified.

Because psychiatrists are medical doctors, they can prescribe medications and alternative treatments for mental health disorders, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Psychiatrists can provide limited therapy, but most don’t. If they do, it is very little therapy and mostly medication management.

Are there any side effects?

There are several different antidepressants and all of these variations may impact your body chemistry differently. You may not experience any side effects with one antidepressant, but you may experience some common side effects with another. It all depends. However, there is a wide range of common side effects that you may experience, including:

  • Irritability, hostility, aggression, or agitation
  • Anxiety
  • Panic
  • Nausea, diarrhea, or constipation
  • Restlessness
  • Dizziness
  • Diminished sex drive
  • Sweating
  • Fatigue or sleepiness
  • Insomnia
  • Headaches
  • Mood swings
  • Dry mouth

If you experience any of these side effects from a medication prescribed by your provider, it is important to let them know. They will quickly switch you to another medication or try an alternative to medication, such as TMS therapy or esketamine nasal spray. We want you to find relief, and relief does not include uncomfortable side effects.

How does medication mangement work?

Antidepressants work by impacting neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, to alleviate the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders. Like taking an antibacterial medicine for a cold, medications such as antidepressants are taken to make mental illness symptoms more manageable.

Your provider can choose from a variety of antidepressants that act on different neurotransmitters to regulate mood or increase electrical flow among brain cells. Together, we will walk through your medication options and collaborate on making a medication management plan.
